The Importance of Mentorship
Most Wise Master's Update:
We talk often in Masonry about the importance of mentorship, especially in regard to those who join the Craft. The torch of leadership we all carry in this fraternity will eventually, after all, be passed on to the next generation. They will have the responsibility of keeping it burning until the time comes to pass it on once more.
Recently, I had the pleasure of watching a young boy that I mentored act like a great man. I had the pleasure of watching the true character of a Mason shine through in a time of trouble and need.
Just a little over a month ago, twenty-three year old Robert Wheeler helped an injured man in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings. You can view Robert's story here, however I'd also like to point out proudly that it was portrayed in far more places than this.
I had the pleasure of sponsoring Rob into Freemasonry. He was raised in Daniel Webster Lodge in May of 2008, just five years ago. Rob recently received a Grand Lodge scholarship last summer, and he graduated from Framingham State University this very afternoon. I can't speak to how much Rob wishes to get involved in Freemasonry as an officer. Be that as it may, I can take pride in knowing that a young man has become a great man while a member of our fraternity. This is the kind of difference we should be striving to make in Freemasonry.
We will never know when our men will answer the call to greatness. I know that it all starts with our ability to be good mentors so that they will be prepared for the call. The upcoming One Day Class Mount Olivet is co-sponsoring is emphasizing this importance by asking all lodges to send at least one mentor for every two candidates, however one to one is preferred.
Fraternally,
